Last night in the United States of America, a man was murdered by the State of Georgia. Despite last minute pleas for a stay of execution due to reasonable doubt as to his guilt, despite the fact that seven witnesses re-canted their earlier testimonies and despite the 50,000 signatures on a petition asking for clemency, Troy Davis was killed by lethal injection at 11:08pm. They will tell you it is a humane way of killing. Don’t believe them. It took him almost twenty minutes to die. This is the brutal reality of America’s shameful and shocking belief in and support of state executions.
One of only a handful of countries in the world still implementing the death penalty, America’s brutality puts it on the same level with the likes of Iran, China, Syria, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – countries whose shameful human rights abuses have been well documented. What does America have in common with these countries? A totalitarian regime? An oligarchy? A brutal dictator? No, no and no. The one commonality that the U.S.A. and these regimes share is that of religious extremism. Extreme right-wing Southern “Christian” fanaticism – the belief in a vengeful and angry God and the unshakeable and terrifying narrow-mindedness that comes with it.
Why does a country execute its civilians rather than incarcerate them? Time and again it has been proven that eye-witness testimonies can be problematic and should not be relied upon solely.
