Lights out for Earth Hour!
-
Starting this morning, lights will go off around the world in recognition of the annual “Earth Hour,” an event planned as a call for action on climate change.
Participants plan to switch off their lights for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. in their respective time zones. Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007.
Cities, countries, educational groups and individuals plan to participate, according to the event sponsor, World Wildlife Fund. Lights are scheduled to go off at more than 45 national monuments or landmarks in the United States, including the Las Vegas strip and the Empire State Building.
Gov. Charlie Crist and the state Department of Environmental Protection this week asked Floridians to participate.
“Earth Hour reminds us of the harmful effects of climate change, and how worldwide action can alleviate this issue both in the present and for the future,” department Secretary Michael Sole said in a statement.
The University of Florida announced its Century Tower will go dark this weekend to demonstrate its commitment to fight climate change.
Event organizers said lights will go out at such international landmarks as the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Last year, an estimated 1 billion people participated worldwide, including 80 million Americans.

All you have to do is look around and you can see that this earth is warming up or at least changing, glaciers are melting, weather paterns are changing, the winters are not as cold as they used to be, and many other obvious changes are occuring. Just look around at nature and it is right in front of your face.
I’m not quite sure if the greenhouse effect is really causing this though because I have also read that the other planets are also warming up at the same rate.
