New York, NY (AHN) – PC maker IBM is holding a meeting with researchers at its laboratory in San Jose, California in August to discuss the development of a battery powered by air or oxygen as it bids to become a major player in the electric vehicle market.

The meeting at the Almaden Research Center on Aug. 26 to 27 will assemble experts from nanotechnologists to chemists who will look into the promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries.

Nobel Laureate and energy expert Professor Burton Richter, Tesla Motors co-founder Marc Tarpenning and Deborah Gordon, co-author of “2 Billion Cars” will speak during the meeting.

“Leading experts from academia, government laboratories and industry will give overviews of the current state of the art and discuss their research into next-generation battery technologies and the evolution of energy storage. A panel session will focus on US government funding for energy storage research,” IBM said in its website.

A lithium-air battery is lightweight and stores 40 times more power than a lithium-ion rechargeable battery and fuel cells, according to Electric Vehicle News. Power is produced through the chemical reaction of lithium metal with oxygen.

IBM does not plan to produce the new battery but rather license it to manufacturers. It plans to market the product for electric vehicles to make such car run for 500 miles in a single charge.

thanks a lot for this article….it is this kind of out and out proactive technology based thinking that may save our beautiful planet…..hope this battery becomes a reality by an year or so….commercially….

a jealous way would be to make these plans be made available on free online opensource forums and ask every one to embrace it the soonest….i know i am only hoping IBM thinks outside the box and profits & includes the world as its home and not only U.S
